Am I washing lopi wool correctly?

A few years ago, I purchased four hand-knitted Álafoss Lopi wool thongs off of Etsy. You can see the thongs here (SFW):

The only problem that I've had with wearing them is that they are a pain to wash, in large part because I don’t really know how. But I do have a routine.

When it comes time to clean them, I usually fill a small tote box with lukewarm water and add a little bit of shampoo. I then submerge the thongs and vigorously massage the shampoo into them so that the suds get all the way through the material. I do this for about 15 minutes. Once that’s over with, I rinse the thongs out under a faucet, lie them flat on a towel, and pat them down. I generally hang them from my shower curtain with my bathroom fan on so that they will dry quicker.

Would this be sufficient? Or do I need to do more in order to clean them thoroughly? I don't want to risk a bacterial infection.

Yes, this sounds like a sufficient cleaning routine. You could use a wool detergent instead of shampoo, but if you have no problems, it's fine.

You might try using a mesh garment bag, made for delicate items, in the washing machine, cold water, gentle cycle, Wool-ite... Just need a capful of Wool-ite. air dry flat, fluff with fork...

I actually did try that once, using the grey thong. I either didn't tie the mesh bag tightly enough, or it just wasn't up to the job in the first place; the thong came loose and got knocked around in my portable washer. A lot of the wool strands were loosened. It's still perfectly wearable, just a bit poofier than before.

Sorry, but I'm keeping this conversation PG-13. I wear lopi thongs with dresses and skirts on cold days and for special occasions, or whenever I just want to do that little bit extra to feel more alluring.
